Cavaliers Close Final Weekend Before 2020 Dual Season Begins
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Members of the No. 20 Virginia women’s tennis team closed the final weekend tournament before dual season begins with the final day of play at the Orlando Invitational and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Sunday (Jan. 12).
The Orlando Invitational was played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., while the National Collegiate Tennis Classic was played at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Virginia will open the dual portion of the season at home this weekend, hosting Towson in a 1 p.m. match at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on Saturday (Jan. 18).
CAVALIERS AT THE ORLANDO INVITATIONAL
The Cavaliers closed out the Orlando Invitational with a pair of singles wins and split action in doubles on Sunday. Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) went undefeated on the weekend as the No. 30 player nationally in singles posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Missouri’s Serena Nash. She and her doubles partner, Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia), also won their doubles match with a shutout of Iowa State’s duo of Karen Alvarez and Ting-Pei Chang.
Munera, the No. 78 player nationally in singles, dropped her final match of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Missouri’s Ellie Wright. Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) won her final match of the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Tigers’ Vivien Abraham. She and her doubles partner, Amber O’Dell (New Milford, N.J.), dropped their final doubles match to Iowa State’s Christin Hsieh and Thasaporn Naklo by a score of 6-2.
CAVALIERS AT THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE TENNIS CLASSIC
The Virginia duo of Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) and Vivian Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.) took a runner-up finish in doubles at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. The Cavalier duo fell to Arizona State’s Cali Jankowski and Tereza Kolarova by a score of 6-4 on Sunday.
