No. 9 Virginia Opens Conference Slate at Home This Weekend

Virginia hosts BC on Friday at 3 p.m. and Syracuse on Sunday at 11 a.m. on the outdoor courts of the Virginia Tennis Facility

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 9 Virginia women’s tennis (8-1, 0-0) opens Atlantic Coast Conference action with a pair of home matches, taking on Boston College (3-2, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. and Syracuse (6-1, 0-0 ACC) on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m.

Both matches are scheduled to be played outdoors at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort. Please monitor the Virginia women’s tennis social media accounts for any weather-related changes.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • The Cavaliers fell to No. 9 in this week’s ITA rankings. This is the first week that computerized rankings are used instead of a coaches poll
  • Virginia went 2-1 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, including picking up a 4-3 win against No. 3 Georgia in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Round of 16 pairing
  • Virginia has played five straight matches against top-20 teams with its only loss being a 4-1 setback at Indoors against eventual champion North Carolina
  • Elaine Chervinsky and Natasha Subhash each have 15 singles victories this season
  • Chervinsky and Subhash are 8-1 in dual matches as a doubles team this season
  • Subhash picked up her third career victory against a top-10 opponent, downing No. 10 Mell Reasco of Georgia in straight sets at ITA Indoors
  • Subhash has moved up to a No. 15 rankings in singles
  • Emma Navarro is 5-0 in dual matches in singles
  • Amber O’Dell and Navarro are ranked No. 7 in the updated doubles rankings

NOTING THE OPPONENTS

  • BC canceled both of its matches last weekend, including what would have been its conference opener against Syracuse, as the Eagles were adhering to the ACC’s COVID protocols
  • The Eagles were 4-12 last season with a 2-11 mark in the ACC
  • Virginia is 24-0 all-time against BC
  • UVA is 13-1 all-time against Syracuse
  • Syracuse’s last win in the series was in 2016
  • Three of the last four meetings have been 4-3 victories by UVA
  • The Orange will play at Virginia Tech on Friday before coming to Charlottesville
  • Shiori Ito and Polina Kozyreva are both 7-0 in singles in dual matches. They both play at slots four and five

ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers are on the road next week at Duke (March 4) and North Carolina (March 6) before returning home to host Florida State on Friday, March 18
