EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – The No. 11 Virginia men’s golf team owns the first-day lead at the Hamptons Intercollegiate after 36 holes of play on Monday. The Cavaliers posted rounds of 3-under 285 and 4-over 292 for a two-round total of 1-over 577. Yale is in second place, 13 strokes behind UVA.

The second round was suspended due to darkness and will resume Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m.

Virginia, which finished its rounds, was led by freshman Ben James, who posted back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71. He is in first place at 2-under 142, one shot ahead of teammate Pietro Bovari. Bovari led the Cavaliers during the opening round, shooting 4-under 68. Sophomore Deven Patel was tied for third place at 2-over 146. He had rounds of 72 and 74.

UVA’s other scores included a 149 (77, 72) by Chris Fosdick and a 151 (74, 77) by George Duangmanee. Liam Powderly, competing as an individual shot 77 during the first round. He did not complete his second round before play was suspended.

Tuesday, Virginia will attempt to win the tournament for the second straight year. Last fall the Cavaliers tied Georgia Tech and Northwestern for the team title at 4-under, 860. Fosdick captured medalist honors, shooting 7-under 209
