SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The 26th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team opened play at the NCAA Championships by shooting 10-over 298 and finished the first day in 23rd place. The Cavaliers were led by sophomore Amanda Sambach who shot 2-under 70 and was tied for 10th after the opening 18 holes. It marked the ninth consecutive under-par round for the ACC Individual Champion.

Sambach stood at 1-over after making a bogey on the Grayhawk Golf Club’s fourth hole. She then reeled off three consecutive birdies. A bogey on No. 9 cost her a stroke and she made the turn at 1-under par.

Sambach posted birdies on the 10th and 11th holes to get to 3-under before a bogey on No. 12. She finished her round with six consecutive pars.

UVA’s Megan Propeck used a birdie on the 18th hole to end her day at 2-over and stand in 66th place while Rebecca Skoler finished at 4-over 76 and was 106th. Celeste Valinho shot 78 to be in 127th position and Jennifer Cleary finished 142nd with a 79.

Second-ranked Wake Forest leads the 30-team field at 9-under 279. Oklahoma State’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard posted the best individual score, shooting 6-under 66.

During the second round, UVA, Arizona and Oklahoma State will start at 11:52 a.m. MST from the 10th tee. The third round is repaired based on the team standings. It starts at 6:10 a.m. MT while Monday’s final round of stroke play, following a cut to 15 teams, starts at 10 a.m.
