SANTIAGO, Chile – Two current members of the Virginia women’s squash team, Meagan Best (Barbados) and Maria Moya (Ecuador), and alumna Mandy Haywood (Barbados) competed at the 2023 PanAm Games in Santiago, Chile, Oct. 31- Nov. 4.
Best won two bronzes at the games, one in doubles and one in the team event. Haywood picked up a bronze medal in the team event.
Best and Moya both advanced to the quarterfinals in singles but did not medal in that event.
Best partnered with Margot Prow in the women’s doubles competition. They won their quarterfinal 11-5, 11-3 against Darlyn Sandoval and Winifer Bonilla of the Independent Athletes Team to advance to the medal rounds before falling in the semifinals, which earned them a bronze medal.
Haywood and Best both won their matches on the first day of the team competition to give Barbados a 2-0 victory against Chile in the quarterfinals. Haywood started the day with an 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 win against Antonia Vera Sepúlveda. Best followed with a dominant 11-3, 11-4, 11-1 win against Ana Pinto.
All three Cavaliers had previously competed at the Junior PanAms, but this was their debut at the senior competition.
