Women’s DMR Sets UVA Record, Caps Impressive Weekend Showing
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field program closed its heavy slate of competition across the Eagle Elite Invitational (Boston, Mass.), David Hemery Valentine Invitational (Boston, Mass.) and Tiger Paw Invitational (Clemson, S.C.) on Saturday (Feb. 10) as the women’s distance medley relay squad made UVA history while climbing into the nation’s top-six.
Women’s DMR Tops UVA Record
- With a team featuring Anna Workman, Alahna Sabbakhan, Maggie Hock and Margot Appleton, the women’s DMR squad bested its own Virginia record by 3 seconds clocking 10:52.22 at the Eagle Elite Invitational.
- The performance marks the second time the DMR record has fallen this indoor season, as the Cavaliers topped a record time set at the Penn State National Open (Jan. 27).
- The performance puts the Cavaliers at No. 6 on the 2024 NCAA Division I Indoor qualifying list with the top-12 at the end of the season to appear at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Yasin Sado and Gary Martin Showcase Range
- After a historic evening breaking the UVA mile indoor record on Friday (Feb. 9), Gary Martin returned in the 800 meters. He ran 1:48.71 at the David Hemery Valentine invitational, claiming the fourth-fastest time in UVA indoor history.
- Yasin Sado ran 7:56.83 over the 3000 meters in an elite field at the Eagle Elite Invitational. Sado ran against some of the best distance athletes in NCAA Division I, three of whom finished in the top 15 at the NCAA cross country championships.
3 Go Sub-4 in Men’s Mile
- Nate Mountain took second place in heat three of the men’s mile with a time of 3:58.16. A personal-best performance puts Mountain at No. 6 on the UVA all-time list.
- Coming in at fourth in heat four, Will Anthony cracked the UVA all-time list in the men’s mile running 3:58.39 going under four minutes for the first time in his career. Anthony’s performance makes seven active UVA milers under 3:59.00 in the mile.
- Running 3:58.85, Wes Porter locked in seventh place in heat three, just under two seconds behind his personal best set at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational last year.
Brooke Lumpkin Highlights Field Events
- Brooke Lumpkin started the Cavaliers off with a third-place finish in the women’s shot put invitational throwing a distance of 15.48 meters (50’ 9.5”).
- In the triple jump, Jordan Hardy reached 12.86 meters (42’ 2.25”) for a seventh-place finish in the event.
Fourth Fastest Time for Men’s 4×400 M Relay
- In a fast heat, the men’s 4×400 meter relay ran 3:12.19, the fourth fastest indoor 4×4 time in UVA history. The effort from Alex Sherman, Evans White IV, Gage Gose and Jaden Lyons capped off a strong weekend of racing for the Cavalier sprinters at Clemson.
- The women wrapped up the Tiger Paw Invitational with a season-best performance in the 4×400 meter relay, as Sarah Akpan, Anzhelika Parenchuk, Brooke’Lyn Drakeford and Emily Alexandru clocked in at 3:43.08.
- In the women’s 200 meters, Sarah Akpan placed third in her heat clocking a personal-best of 23.69 seconds which is good for the third-fastest in program history.
- Evans White IV placed third in his 200-meter heat clocking a personal-best time of 21.88 while Jay Pendarvis posted 21.89

The Cavaliers will return to the track on Friday, February 16th at the Arkansas Qualifier (Fayetteville, Ark.) and the Terrier DMR Challenge (Boston, Mass.). The rest of the team heads to Blacksburg, Va for the Virginia Tech Challenge.
