Jason Baum Promoted to Deputy Athletic Director for Legal & Regulatory Affairs
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia athletics director Carla Williams announced today (April 11), the promotion of Jason Baum to the position of deputy athletic director for legal and regulatory affairs. Baum has been a member of the Virginia athletics department since 2014. Most recently, he has overseen the compliance department as the associate athletics director for governance & regulatory affairs. He replaces Jim Booz on the department’s senior staff.
“Jason is exceptionally knowledgeable and skilled in legislative, legal and policy matters regarding the everchanging landscape of college athletics,” Williams said. “We are extremely fortunate to have him on staff and to be able to elevate him at this critical time in our industry. He has been an invaluable team member the past few years and we trust his expertise will continue to help us shape our commitment to excellence moving forward.”
In his new role, Baum will be responsible for oversight of the senior associate athletic director for legal & regulatory affairs and all aspects of compliance, legal and regulatory related issues. He will serve as the primary liaison between the athletic department and the office of general counsel, office of risk management, office of youth protection and office for equal opportunity and civil rights. He will be responsible for working with federal and state government relations liaisons on various issues related to intercollegiate athletics.
Baum will coordinate the hiring of his replacement, the senior associate athletics director for legal & regulatory affairs and an additional open position for an assistant athletics director for compliance.
Baum joined the Virginia athletics compliance staff in 2014 as an assistant director. In 2022 he was promoted to associate AD for governance & regulatory affairs. He previously served as the department’s director of compliance. He was instrumental in the development of UVA’s Name, Image and Likeness policies, providing guidance regarding sports wagering and other regulatory matters.
He previously worked as a director of institutional compliance at Southern University and a compliance assistant at Maryland.
Prior entering college athletics, Baum was a practicing attorney who focused on intellectual property, employment law, and litigation. Additionally, he was a senior law clerk to the Honorable Michele D. Hotten of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
Baum earned his Juris Doctor from American University Washington College of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a native of Southern California.
