Four Cavaliers Competed at NCAA Individual Championships
STILLWATER, Okla. – Four Virginia women’s tennis players competed in the 2024 NCAA Individual Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
Senior Hibah Shaikh and sophomore Annabelle Xu competed in the singles draw, while juniors Mélodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky competed in doubles.
Xu won two matches in the tournament, advancing to the Round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-4 win against No. 14 Sofia Cabezas of Tennessee and a 6-3, 6-3 victory against No. 21 Vic Allen of Florida State. She fell 6-2, 6-2 against top-seeded Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M on Wednesday (May 22) to end her tournament run.
By advancing to the Round of 16, Xu will earn All-America honors in singles when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announces those accolades next month. Xu was an alternate to play in the tournament when selections were initially announced and moved into the main draw by withdrawals.
Shaikh lost 6-3, 6-3 to 9-16 seed Irina Canots Siemers of Ohio State on Monday (May 20) in the first round.
Chervinsky and Collard, originally unseeded in the doubles tournament, were elevated to a 5-8 seed in the doubles draw. They fell 6-2, 6-2 against No. 11 Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase of Tennessee on Tuesday (May 21) in the opening round of the 32-team draw.
