HONG KONG —
Virginia sophomore attacker Madison Alaimo won a gold medal with the US Junior National Team at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship on Saturday (Aug. 24) in Hong Kong.
The United States completed one of the most dominant runs in international lacrosse history by beating Canada 23-6 in the gold medal game. It marked the sixth time in eight tries that the U.S. won the women’s junior-level gold medal. The U.S. outscored its opponents 211-20 while winning all seven games in the tournament.
The Americans went 4-0 in pool play to advance to the knockout rounds but were the No. 2 seed in the finals bracket, with Canada earning the top seed.
Alaimo set the event record for most assists with 25 in the tournament, breaking Caitlyn Wurzburger’s record of 19 set in 2019.
Alaimo, who was named Player of the Game during the pool play contest against China, ranked third among all players in points with 43, scoring 18 goals in addition to her 25 assists.
In her first season at Virginia, Alaimo set the UVA record for assists by a freshman in a single season with 27. She also tallied 17 goals and 24 ground balls.
