Virginia Opened Fall Individual Season at Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.. –  The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule by competing Friday through Sunday, Sept. 13-15, at the Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Seven Cavaliers competed in singles against players from Old Dominion, Purdue and Charlotte, going a combined 11-8 in their matches. The doubles teams went 7-2 on the weekend.

Sophomores Blanca Pico Navarro and Zara Larke both went 3-0 in their singles matches. Seniors Mélodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky were 3-0 in their doubles matches.

Next Up

• Cavaliers will have their first opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships by competing in the ITA All-American Championships, being held Sept. 21-29 in Cary, N.C.
• Ten singles players (eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists) and four doubles teams (main draw semifinalists) will punch their championship tickets to the NCAA Individual Championships, being held Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas

Friday, Sept. 13

The Cavaliers won three singles matches in rain-delayed action on Friday, with Elaine Chervinsky, Zara Larke and Blanca Pico Navarro all picking up straight-set victories against opponents from Purdue. Chervinsky and Mélodie Collard also picked up a doubles victory.

Saturday, Sept. 14

The Cavaliers again won three singles matches, this time facing opponents from Old Dominion. Larke and Pico Navarro both won for the second time, improving to 2-0 in singles. The Cavaliers swept all three doubles matches.

Sunday, Sept. 15

Larke and Pico Navarro stayed perfect in singles for the weekend, picking up their third straight-set wins to start the fall 3-0. For the second straight day, the Cavaliers swept the three doubles matches.
