HOW IT HAPPENED
Six Cavaliers combined for UVA’s first seven goals and Marek had six saves by the end of the first, when the Hoos led 7-1. Owen Crann (1g) notched his first career goal after he picked up a dead ball on a Dartmouth faceoff violation and was virtually uncontested as barreled down on the cage before firing a strike on the run.
UVA carried its scoring spree into the second, which ultimately resulted in eight straight goals, the longest goal streak by the Cavaliers this year. Dartmouth made a change in net with 5:57 remaining in the first half, when UVA led 11-2. Brendan Millon and midfielder Joey Terenzi (1g, 2a) assisted one another on a pair of goals in the second, including the final of the first half when Terenzi whipped a pass straight into the crosse of Brendan Millon, who quick-sticked it into the net at the horn. The Cavaliers led 12-4 at the intermission, which tied for their largest lead at the break this season.
The second half opened with three consecutive Cavalier goals, including two straight from Ryan Colsey (4g), who despite starting on attack was frequently found himself defended by Dartmouth short-stick midfielders. Colsey made the most of it, nabbing his fourth hat trick of the season and second straight four-goal performance. Virginia’s defense was dominant in the third, keeping the Big Green off the scoreboard, forcing three failed clears and winning the ground ball margin by seven [13-6].
Brendan Millon’s 10th point of the evening came on his sixth assist to Chase Band (2g) with just under 12 minutes to play. Charles Balsamo, who notched the opening goal, bookended the contest with his second strike of the night, marking his first multi-goal effort of the season.
FROM HEAD COACH LARS TIFFANY ...
“Our coaching staff is thrilled with the energy, effort and performance of our men tonight. We love challenges, and certainly playing two games in three days presents such a challenge.
“We know how strong a team Dartmouth is with the talent that they have accrued and coaching expertise of Sean Kirwan and his staff. Therefore, we are really encouraged with how well we did against an opponent that we truly respect.
“It is such a blessing to have a goalie grow in confidence, step up, and play better with each game. Jake Marek is doing just that. I love seeing how well our offense moved the ball against Utah, and again tonight. The unselfishness is contagious. What a performance by Brendan Millon. And John Schroter, stepping up again and neutralizing another elite attackman – our captain is leading the way on the defensive end.”
