FREDERISCKSBURG, Va. – In the opener of a four-game road swing, the No. 9 Virginia baseball team (21-5) run-ruled the Maryland Terrapins (11-13) 16-6 at Virginia Credit Union Stadium on Tuesday night (March 24).

Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Virginia trailed 6-5 before exploding for the final 11 runs of the game, including a nine-run eighth inning.

On a night where all nine batters in the Virginia starting lineup had hits, the Cavalier trio of AJ Gracia, Eric Becker and Noah Murray combined for nine base knocks and seven runs driven in.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Kyle Johnson singled home Harrison Didawick with a base hit to left field.
  • In the top of the top third, Maryland took its first lead of the contest as the Terrapins strung together four straight base knocks, including a two-run double to left from Ryan Costello.
  • UVA right answered right back in the bottom of the frame by scoring three runs on five hits, including RBI base knocks from Garcia, Sam Harris and Joe Tiroly to put the Cavaliers up 4-3.
  • After the two old ACC foes traded runs in the fourth, Maryland regained the upper hand in the sixth with a pair of runs on an RBI double and a UVA fielding error.
  • Following the seventh inning stretch, Didawick tied the game with a double to right center before Murray, with a single to right that brought home Didawick to give Virginia a 7-6 lead.
  • In relief, Matt Augustin and Tyler Kapa combined 2.1 innings of shutout ball to set up Virginia’s monster ninth inning. Augustin picked up the save while Kapa earned a save.
  • In an inning that the Cavaliers sent 12 batters to the plate, UVA scored nine runs on five, including a two-run double from Eric Becker that ended the game and finalized the 16-6 Virginia victory.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • With the midweek win, Virginia improves to 114-80-1 all-time against Maryland and has won the last six meetings.
  • The Cavaliers have won both games this season played in minor league ballparks.
  • On the season, UVA moves to 16-1 when scoring first and 12-0 when scoring 10 or more runs.
  • Tuesday marked the fourth time this season that Virginia did not hit a home run.
  • With his single in the second, Eric Becker extended his team-best hitting streak to 14 games.

FROM HEAD COACH CHRIS POLLARD

“We were able to take advantage of some free offense, which we hadn’t gotten all day. We didn’t have a free 90 from the mound through the first seven innings. People who look at the box score in full are not going to realize for seven innings that was a back-and-forth really good ball game with two teams that were playing really well, with both teams throwing a lot of strikes, both teams making great plays defensively and both teams really filling up the zone.“

UP NEXT

No. 9 Virginia will return to the ACC on the weekend as the Cavaliers ship up to Boston College for a three-game series. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 3 p.m. and will be carried on ACCNX and WINA (98.9/1070AM).
