Mikey Herring returned to the University of Virginia in June 2026 as the Cavaliers' offensive coordinator after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach, offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Dartmouth.
A former Virginia standout from 2015-19, Herring helped lead the Cavaliers to the program's sixth NCAA championship in 2019 before beginning his coaching career. He arrived back in Charlottesville with six years of Division I coaching experience, including stops at Dartmouth, UMBC and VMI.
At Dartmouth, Herring coordinated the Big Green offense while also overseeing recruiting from 2023-26. Prior to Dartmouth, he served as offensive coordinator at UMBC during the 2023 season, helping the Retrievers average 11.85 goals per game, their highest scoring output in nearly a decade. Under Herring's tutelage, Mateo Brown earned Second Team All-America East honors after leading UMBC in goals and points.
Herring began his collegiate coaching career at VMI, where he served as offensive coordinator from 2020-22 and added recruiting coordinator responsibilities during the 2021-22 academic year. During the 2022 campaign, the Keydets posted their highest single-season goal total in 22 years while improving their scoring average. Under Herring's guidance, Hartley Jordan earned First Team All-SoCon honors and Luke Rusterucci was named to the conference's All-Freshman Team. Herring also served as an assistant coach at the 2022 USILA North/South Senior All-Star Game.
As a student-athlete at Virginia, Herring appeared in 59 career games, primarily at attack, totaling 34 goals and 45 assists for 79 career points. He capped his career by helping the Cavaliers capture the 2019 NCAA championship. During his senior season, Herring posted a .630 shooting percentage, the highest by a Cavalier with at least 10 goals since 1999. In Virginia's 2019 NCAA Tournament first-round victory over Robert Morris, he tied the program's then-NCAA Tournament single-game record with six goals. Herring also scored the overtime game-winner at Syracuse in 2019, helping Virginia secure its first victory in the Carrier Dome since 2009.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Herring earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Virginia in 2019.
