Charlottesville Regional: Elon Rallies For 10-7 Win Over UNCW
Five-run sixth inning highlights Phoenix win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Elon used a five-run, two-out rally in the top of sixth inning to highlight a 10-7 win over UNCW on Friday (May 31) in game two of the 2013 NCAA Charlottesville Regional before 3,243 fans at Davenport Field.

Elon (33-28) meets Virginia (48-10) on Sat., June 1 at 6 p.m., while UNCW (37-22) meets Army (29-22) tomorrow at 1 p.m. in an elimination contest.

Antonio Alvarez led the Elon 10-hit attack by going 2-for-3, including a three-run double in the five-run sixth. Alvarez drove in four runs and scored three times in the win. Wil Leathers added a pinch-hit two-run home run and Chris Bresnahan added two hits and a pair of RBI.

Andrew MacDonald (5-1) earned the win in relief of starter Kyle Webb. MacDonald pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Webb was tagged for seven runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.

UNCW’s Terrence Connelly went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Corey Dick went 3-for-5. Luke Dunlop and Andy Austin added two hits each.

Mat Batts (9-4) took the loss for UNCW, allowing eight runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Batts allowed two runs in the second inning, then retired 12 consecutive batters before giving up five runs in the sixth inning.

Elon plated two runs in the top of the second. Alex Swim led off with a triple to left-center field and scored on a double by Alvarez, who was sacrificed to third before scoring on an RBI groundout by Danny Lynch.

Ryan LaGrange and Dick opened the bottom of the second for the Seahawks with back-to-back singles and scored on a two-run double by Austin. After a two-out walk by Michael Bass, Connolly drove home Austin with a single to left.

UNCW increased its lead to 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Connelly was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single to right by Dunlop. Connelly scored on a throwing error by Webb and Dick drove in Dunlop with a ground-rule double to left center.

Elon claimed a 7-5 lead after scoring five runs after two outs in the top of the sixth. Alvarez’s three-run double was immediately followed by Leathers’ pinch-hit, two-run home run over the leftfield wall.

UNCW tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth. Bass reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a single by Connelly. Dunlop followed with a single, ending the day for Webb. Tyler Molinaro greeted MacDonald with a bloop single to left, plating Connelly.

In the seventh, Elon claimed an 8-7 advantage on an unearned run off reliever Justin Livengood and the Phoenix tacked on two more runs on a single by Bresnahan in the eighth.

UNCW put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but MacDonald retired Drew Farber on a fielder’s choice to end the game.
