McCue Center (290 Massie Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22904)

Dedicated on Sept. 14, 1991, the McCue Center honors Dr. Frank C. McCue III and his enduring contributions to the University of Virginia and the field of sports medicine. Originally home to Virginia’s football program and several departments within Athletics, the McCue Center accommodates offices for numerous coaching staffs, academic and student-athlete services, compliance and administration.

The facility remains an integral component of the Athletics precinct and is physically connected to the Harrison Family Olympic Sports Center, a $75 million project completed in September 2025 that included the renovation of the McCue Center. Prior to the renovation, the McCue Center housed a 7,000-square-foot athletic training space and 8,000-square-foot weight room, both of which are now located in the adjoining Harrison Center.

McCue trained young doctors and cared for Cavalier athletes for more than 40 years. After finishing his UVA undergraduate work in 1952, he stayed in Charlottesville to attend medical school and complete his residency. During those years, the seeds were sown that he would lead to a lifelong association with UVA and its athletic programs. Following a two-year hand surgery fellowship in California, McCue returned to UVA in 1961. He was a professor of orthopedic surgery and the director of the Division of Sports Medicine and Hand Surgery at the University’s Health Sciences Center.

“His name is synonymous with sports medicine,” said Joe Palumbo, a 1951 football All-American at Virginia who organized the group of donors that funded construction of the McCue Center, which cost $10 million. “He’s a very caring person. Everybody recognizes him and loves him. He does so much for so many and he’s very sincere about it. At the McCue Center, there must be 1,500 signed pictures from pro athletes from all over the country whom he’s helped. He’s a saint.”
