CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – George Mason’s Kevin Kawecki held theUniversity of Virginia to three runs on four hits over eight innings tosend the Cavaliers to their second loss in as many days here Wednesday asthe Patriots downed UVA 6-3. With the loss, the Cavs fall to 10-16 on theseason, while GMU improves to 10-7-1. The loss snapped an eight-game UVAwinning streak at home.

After the Patriots plated a run in the top of the first, Virginiatied the score in the bottom of the second when Josh Bowling belted hissecond home run in two games. GMU recaptured the lead in the top of thethird with two runs on two hits and a pair of UVA errors, and the Patsnever relinquished the lead. UVA scratched for a run in the bottom of thethird and another in the sixth, but a three-run fourth for George Masonproved to be the difference.

Virginia used five pitchers on the day with starter Jon Metzgerallowing a run on one hit with two strike outs in two innings of work.Metzger did not figure in the decision as John Thomas (0-2) spelled him inthe third and allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits in one andtwo-thirds innings.

Kawecki (1-1) allowed just one earned run in his eight innings ofwork with two walks and six strike outs. David Basset pitched the ninth inorder with a strike out for his fourth save of the season.

Five Cavaliers entered the game with hitting streaks of four gamesor more and four of them came to an end, including Julian Gonzalez’career-long 11-game stretch. That was the longest of the season by a UVAplayer. It was also the first game of the month for Gonzalez in which hestarted and did not get a hit.

Doug Rodio led the way for GMU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with anRBI. Eddie Jordan also scored twice and drove in two runs.

Virginia will return to action Friday as the Cavaliers open athree-game series with North Carolina State. The Wahoos and Wolfpack willplay at 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Sunday and wrap up the series Sunday at 1p.m. The Patriots, meanwhile, open a three-game set with Old DominionFriday at 2:30 p.m.
