Cavaliers Fall to Georgia Tech in Overtime

ATLANTA (AP) – Jason Collier scored 19 points, including Georgia Tech’s last10 in regulation, as the Yellow Jackets snapped a three-game losing streak witha 74-68 overtime victory over Virginia Thursday night.
The Cavaliers, losing their third in a row to end the regular season, forcedthe extra period when Donald Hand hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to tie it at60. Hand finished with 28 points.
Virginia (14-15, 4-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) took the lead in the extraperiod on a basket by Willie Dersch, but Collier hit two free throws to tie itand John Babul added two more free throws – his first points of the night – togive Tech (15-13, 6-9 ACC) the lead for good.
Collier then made one of two foul shots and Babul followed with a layup thatgave Tech a 67-62 lead that the Cavs could not overcome.
The Jackets closed their scoring on four free throws by Jason Floyd andthree by T.J. Vines, offsetting 3-point baskets by Virginia’s Cade Lemcke andHand in the final 24 seconds. Hand also had a game-high 13 rebounds.
Alvin Jones added 16 points for Tech, playing 42 minutes despite being adoubtful performer because of a sprained left ankle. He managed nine rebounds,most of those coming flat-footed.
Floyd added 15 and Vines 12 for the Jackets, and Collier had 12 rebounds.
Chris Williams scored 12 and Adam Hall 10 for Virginia.
