Severe Weather Shelter Indicator

The University of Virginia prides itself on providing an exciting and entertaining atmosphere for fans at Scott Stadium. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of those in attendance, from fans to student-athletes and employees.

A key part of this commitment involves closely and constantly monitoring the weather for potentially dangerous conditions. UVA employs a series of checks on weather conditions, including the use of sophisticated radar and tracking services to gauge the severity and track of storms.

Working with game officials, the University may decide to suspend a game, close and evacuate the stadium because of weather conditions. In these cases, fans initially are alerted via text alert, public announcements within Scott Stadium, local media, social media and other platforms that evacuation may be possible.

If evacuation is mandated, fans should exit the stadium and seek shelter until receiving notice that the game will be resumed and the stadium is reopened. Shelter options include personal vehicles and designated University buildings in the stadium vicinity.

In the event of an evacuation of Scott Stadium, University buildings open to fans as temporary shelters will be indicated with orange and blue signs bearing a shelter logo and the word “SHELTER” (see sample signage on the side).

The University of Virginia prohibits smoking and vaping in all of its facilities on Grounds, including athletics facilities There are designated smoking areas at Scott Stadium’s Southwest and East gates.

Direct advertising, sales, and solicitation by outside vendors are not permitted on Grounds. Any distribution of materials on public property shall not disrupt University business, generate security issues, or block sidewalks or roads.

Tailgating is permitted, including the use of propane grills. Charcoal grills are not allowed. Please note that grilling of any kind is not allowed in or on any of the parking garages.

Fans may not block traffic lanes within parking lots with tailgate setups. In the event of an emergency, there must be an unobstructed path for vehicles to access. Tailgate setups not in the grass/pavement/mulch area must remain within the immediate footprint of the vehicle, allowing for traffic flow through the middle lane at all times.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where are the security checkpoints be located?
Screening areas are located at all entrances to Scott Stadium. All those in attendance – from fans to game day staff – will be required to pass through the security checkpoints in an effort to enhance security at the venue’s events.

When will the venue doors open?
Scott Stadium gates will open at 5pm for the Luke Combs concert.

Can I bring in a baby bottle?
Yes, you may bring in a baby bottle but diaper bags are not permitted, a clear bag must be used.

How can I get through screening quickly?
Guests are strongly encouraged to leave bags and non-essential items at home or in their vehicles. Bags and extra items take more time to search and slow down the screening process. Guests do not need to remove jackets, coins, belts, jewelry, watches, etc. Follow these steps and screening should take only a few seconds.

How many bags can each person carry into a venue?
Each guest can enter Scott Stadium with one large clear bag (12″ x 12″ x 6″ or one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag) and an approved purse, clutch or wallet (no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″). The clutch or wallet can be carried separately from the clear bag and will be subject to search.

Do I have to put everything I’m carrying into the permissible bags?
No. Fans are limited only to the type of bags carried into the stadium, not items that they may normally bring to a game that fit in pockets or clutch bags (e.g., keys, makeup, feminine products, comb, phone, wallet, credit cards). Fans may carry a blanket or extra jacket over their arms, and binoculars and/or camera around their necks or in their hands without the case. Fans may also use the clear bag and clutch to carry these items and other permissible items. Every member of the family may carry in a permissible bag. Only prohibited items cannot be carried in clear bags into venues.

What will happen if I show up with a prohibited bag?
Guests that arrive to Scott Stadium the entrances with prohibited bags will not be permitted to enter the venue. In these cases, prohibited bags will need to be returned to guests’ vehicles and/or residence. Guests can then return with an approved clear bag and gain entry into the venue after successful completion of the screening process.

What can fans substitute for diaper bags?
Diapers and other baby supplies can be carried in a clear bag. Each member of a family, including children, are allowed to carry one approved bag and a clutch that meets policy specifications into the stadium.

Can fans bring blankets and large jackets during cold weather?
Yes. Guests are welcome to carry blankets outside of a clear bag. Guests may bring extra coats and jackets into the athletics venues by tossing them over a shoulder or arm. Guests should be prepared to have jackets with pockets searched.

May I leave the facility and re-enter during the game?
Not without a separate game ticket.

I have a medical device; will it be affected if I go through a metal detector? Where can I enter?
Guests with medical concerns should alert event staff personnel upon approaching the security screening checkpoint.
