Men's Lacrosse Drops Game to Syracuse in NCAA Tournament

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Syracuse’s Ryan Powell scored five goals and recorded two assists to lead Syracuse to a 17-14 come-from-behind win over Virginia. Syracuse held Virginia scoreless in the final 20:25 of the game to earn a spot in the NCAA semifinal game next weekend at Rutgers University.
Virginia’s David Wren led the Cavaliers with four goals, including the first two of the game. Jay Jalbert, Wren and Tucker Radebaugh each connected for goals in the first quarter to put the Cavaliers up 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Cavaliers held a lead 9-5 at half-time and led the entire game until the 10:30 mark of the fourth quarter when a John Matthews goal off a feed from Brian Solliday tied the game at 14-14. Matt Cutia gave the Orangemen their first lead of the game with his goal with 9:24 remaining in the game. Drew Melchioni’s unassisted goal at the 5:25 mark of the third quarter was the Cavaliers final goal of the game.
The Orangemen out-shot Virginia 45-41 and won 20 face-offs to Virginia’s 14. Chris Sanderson had 15 saves for Virginia and Jason Gebhardt recorded seven saves and Rob Mulligan had nine saves for Syracuse.
Virginia ends its season with a record of 8-5 while Syracuse record stands at 11-2. The Orangemen will meet defending national champion, Princeton, in the NCAA semifinal game on May 23 in Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
