CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman forward Sheldon Barnes made good on a shot from nine yards out at the 12:42 mark and senior keeper Brock Yetso posted his eighth solo shutout of the season as second-seeded Virginia defeated South Carolina here at Klockner Stadium Sunday 1-0 in second-round action of the 1998 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 16-3-3 on the season and advance to the quarterfinals next weekend against Stanford in Charlottesville. The Gamecocks concluded their season with a 16-5-0 mark.
Sophomore forward Chris Albright corralled the ball at the right corner of the penalty box and passed in to the box. Barnes fielded the ball, turned passed the USC defender and then put a shot past a diving Henry Ring and into the left side of the net.
For Barnes, it was career goal No. 6 and his second of the post season. His six scores this year is tied with Steve Totten and Ryan Trout for second on the team behind Albright’s 20.
It was the second consecutive shutout for the Cavaliers and Yetso, who has not allowed a goal at home since Oct. 28 against Fairleigh Dickinson. That is a span of 291 minutes, 57 seconds with three shutouts for both Yetso and the team.
On the day, Yetso saw 10 shots and made five saves, including a dazzling dive at a ball headed for the upper left corner in the 84th minute.
This marks the first back-to-back shutouts in NCAA Tournament play for the Cavaliers since posting three straight to conclude the 1992 tournament. That season, UVa defeated Dartmouth 3-0, Duke 3-0 and San Diego 2-0 to wrap up its second consecutive national title and third in four seasons.
This is also the first time the Cavs have posted shutouts in each of their first two games in the tournament. Virginia has also now won 10 straight second-round matches and 12 of its last 13 in the round of 16.
