CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head men’s soccer coach George Gelnovatch has announced his team’s schedule for the upcoming 1998 season. The Cavaliers will play 13 of their 20 games at Kloeckner Stadium this season, highlighted by the 14th annual Coca-Cola Classic on Oct. 9 and 11. The tournament will feature Adelphi, Marshall and American, which was a quarterfinalist in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Virginia will open the season with a pair of home exhibition games. The Cavaliers play host to 1996 NCAA Champion St. John’s on Aug. 23, while Connecticut will visit Kloeckner Stadium on Aug. 26. UVa then begins the regular season on the west coast, as it will face Cal State Fullerton and San Diego in Fullerton’s Fila Classic on Sept. 4 and 6.
The Cavaliers’ Atlantic Coast Conference schedule features home games with Maryland, North Carolina State and Duke, while UVa will travel to Wake Forest, North Carolina and Clemson. Other regular season home opponents include Virginia Commonwealth, Ohio State, Lehigh, Buffalo and Fairleigh Dickinson. The Cavaliers will also play at Virginia Tech and take on William & Mary at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, home of the Hampton Roads Mariners.
The ACC Tournament will be held from Nov. 12-15 at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. This will mark the first time the tournament will take place at Spry Stadium, which opened on the campus of Wake Forest University last year.
“We have once again come up with what should be one of the top rated schedules in the country,” says Gelnovatch. “The ACC always sends three or four teams to the NCAA Tournament, and on top of that we are playing the top three teams in the Colonial Athletic Association and taking the trip to Cal State Fullerton. We feel this schedule will help prepare us for the NCAA Tournament come November.”
The Cavaliers return seven starters from the 1997 squad which posted an overall record of 19-4-3, won the ACC title and finished as the runner-up in the NCAA Tournament. Included among the returning players are two-time All-American Matt Chulis and 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year Jason Moore.
Men’s soccer season tickets go on sale next Monday, July 27, at a price of $30.00 for adults and $10.00 for senior citizens (60 and over) or youth (18 and under).
