CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Freshman forward Rob Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime as the seventh-ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over Lehigh at Kloeckner Stadium. Wright’s goal, which came with 5:43 remaining in the first overtime period, was the first of his collegiate career. With the victory Virginia improves to 2-0-1 on the season, while Lehigh suffers its first loss and falls to 2-1-0.
The play on Wright’s goal began when sophomore midfielder Ryan Trout (Media, Pa.) was fouled at the top of the penalty box and the Cavaliers were awarded a free kick. Sophomore midfielder Jason Moore (Lawrenceville, Ga.) took the kick and played the ball to Trout in the right side of the box. Trout then sent a cross toward the goal, where it went through traffic before Wright knocked it in from six yards out at the far post.
Virginia had trailed 1-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation before a goal by sophomore forward Chris Albright (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied up the score. The play began when Trout dribbled the ball down the right side of the field and into the box, then sent a cross to Albright at the far post. Albright then headed the ball into the net from eight yards out at the 81:19 mark.
Lehigh had taken a 1-0 at 51:33, when junior forward Kevin Jackson scored an unassisted goal. Jackson won a free ball at the top of the penalty box and dribbled through the UVa defense before scoring from 12 yards away in left center of the box.
Senior Brock Yetso (Columbia, Md.) made two saves in goal for the Cavaliers while picking up his second victory of the season. Lehigh senior Michael Carberry made six saves in a losing effort.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, when it plays host to Maryland at 7:00 p.m.
