Men's Soccer Player Earns Accolade

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–University of Virginia soccer player Andriy Shapowal is a first-team selection to the 1998 GTE Academic All-America Fall/Winter At-Large Team.
Shapowal, a senior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is a commerce major. He was a second-team Academic All-America selection in 1997.
Shapowal scored two goals and had 10 assists as a midfielder for the 1998 Virginia men’s soccer team. He was fifth on the team in minutes played with 2,173. The Cavaliers compiled an overall record of 19-4-3 last season and lost to UCLA in the championship game of the NCAA Tournament.
A four-year starter for Virginia, Shapowal finished his career with 11 goals and 19 assists. The Cavaliers participated in the NCAA Tournament each of his four years on the team and won the national championship in 1994.
Shapowal has been on Virginia’s Dean’s List for seven semesters and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society.
