CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia golf coach Mike Moraghan and top player James Driscoll have qualified for the 98th U.S. Amateur Golf Championship to be played at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., on August 24-30.
Moraghan finished third overall in qualifying at Berkshire Hills C.C. in Pittsfield, Mass., with a 2-under par 142 (74-68-142). He stood at 3-over par after 26 holes, but birdied five of the next seven holes to get to 2-under par. Moraghan parred the last three holes to shoot 68 and qualify for Rochester. His 68 in the afternoon was the low round of the day. Moraghan was one of four players from his section, out of a field of 88, to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. He last qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 1978.
Driscoll, a Chestnut Hill, Mass. native, was co-medalist with a 1-over par 141 in his sectional qualifying at Tedesco C.C. in Boston, Mass. He fired rounds of 73-68 to tie Kevin Quinn for the top spot. Driscoll qualified for the third time this year; he also qualified in 1995 and 1996.
