CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia, bidding to win its first Atlantic Coast Conference women’s swimming and diving championship since 1990, held onto first place following the second day of action. The Cavaliers have 535.5 points through 13 of 20 events, giving them a 41 point lead over second-place North Carolina (494.5 points) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Defending-champion Clemson stands in third place with 355 points, followed by Maryland with 256 points. North Carolina State (230), Florida State (205) and Duke (127) round out the scoring.
Virginia won two events on the day, those being the 100-yard breaststroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Kori Forster took the title in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.96. The 800 free relay team of Rebecca Cronk, Laura Sullivan, Emily Trakas and Emily Carrig won their event in a time of 7:22.86, after Clemson’s team was disqualified. The Tigers finished first in the event, but had their time taken away when a swimmer jumped into the pool to celebrate while other teams were still completing the event.
North Carolina won four events on the day, and has now had the winning swimmer or relay team in eight of 13 events. Two Tar Heels won their second event of the championship in Richelle Fox and Chrissy Miller.
Fox captured first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 53.45, setting a new ACC meet-record in the process. She adds that to the 50-yard freestyle title which she captured yesterday. Miller captured her second individual event title in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:16.39, adding that to her first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. North Carolina also swept the top three spots in the 400 I.M., as Miller was joined by Erika Acuff (4:16.76) and Kristin Lozeau (4:18.61).
The Tar Heels other first place finishes came in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard medley relay. Summer Mack took the 100 back in an ACC meet record time of 54.95, while the team of Mack, Acuff, Fox and Tracey Rankin set a conference record with their time of 1:41.92 in the 200 medley relay.
The only other event winner on the day was Kim Piotro of Maryland, who took first in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:48.45.
