Virginia's Beth Crimi Named to GTE Academic All-District III Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia softball player Beth Crimi (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) is a memer of the 1998 GTE University Division Academic All-District III Softball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Crimi played an important role in Virginia’s success during the 1998 season. She started 34 of the 65 games she appeared in as catcher or designated hitter. Crimi posted a .306 batting average and was third on the team with 55 hits, including a team-high 15 doubles. She recorded 17 RBI, scored 13 runs and was second on the team with 211 putouts.

Crimi was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week of April 21 and was selected to the 1998 All-Conference team.

The Virginia softball team compiled an overall record of 38-28 during the 1998 season.

A math/physics major, Crimi was named to the Academic All-District III team for the second consecutive year. She joins former UVa players Jamie Hahn (1996, 1995) and Jody Smith (1995) who were also named to the Academic All-District III team.

District III includes schools within the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. To be eligible for Academic All-America softball honors, the student-athlete must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.

The names of the 10 individuals on the Academic All-District III team will appear on the GTE Academic All-America national ballot. The National GTE Academic All-America Softball team will be announced on June 4.
