Virginia Track and Field Competes at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Virginia track and field teams completed competition in the 1999 Texas Relays at the Mike A. Myers Stadium. This was the 72nd running of the Texas Relays. The Cavaliers, coming off solid performances in both the Clemson and Raleigh Relays, were looking to post a strong showing in Austin, Texas.
On the UVa women’s team, Ann Crouse won the javelin throw (Section A) with a toss of 180′-10″ (55.12m), and also placed ninth overall in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 160′-04″ (48.86 meters). Crouse’s toss in the javelin throw finals automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Boise, Idaho on June 2-5. Jamie Sutherland recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:49.00 in the 5,000 meter run finals. Angela Lee placed fourth in the 400 meter intermediate hurdle finals with a time of 58.32. The mark was Lee’s season-best finish in the outdoor season for the event. Kim Turko also competed in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles and finished fifth in her heat with a mark of 1:04.53. Amy Brown took fifth in the discus throw (Section A) with a toss of 161′-2″ (49.12m) and Hillary Wilson finished eighth in the discus throw (Section B) with a mark of 147′-2″ (44.86m). The 4×200 meter relay team took third with a time of 1:36.82 in the finals, the sprint medley relay team recorded a time of 4:02.20 (third in its heat) and the women’s distance medley relay team finished ninth with a time of 12:01.33 in the finals.
On the UVa men’s team, the 4×800 meter relay team of Damond Cromer, David Kozicki, Rob Pearce and Ray Weeden didn’t disappoint, as the squad recorded a third place finished in the event finals with a time of 7:27.68. The teams finish was a collegiate top ten performance this year and was the squad best finish this season. The distance medley relay team finished fifth with a time of 9:51.83 in the DMR finals. Brian Kollar finished sixth in the javelin throw finals (Section A) with a toss of 213′-04″ (65.02m). The 4×1,500 meter relay team finished ninth in the finals event with a time of 15:49.73. Larry Wilson finished eighth in the discus throw finals with a toss of 178′-1″ (54.28m) and Jarrett Hagwood finished sixth (54.87) and Marion Mason placed seventh (56:01) in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles heats. Hagwood (14.41) and Mason (14.67) also competed in the 100 meter hurdles heats for Virginia. John Welsh (197′-2″) and J.D. Murdock (175′-4″) took fourth and eighth respectively in the javelin throw finals (Section B), and Steven Gross placed 13th in the 1,500 meter run finals with a time of 4:03.87.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, April 10 when Virginia hosts the 1999 Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational. The meet will begin at 8:30 a.m.
