CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Keith Fried of the University of Virginia men’s basketball team was a key member of the 10-man 1999 NIKE NIT All-Star Team that compiled a 9-1 record on a recent 13-day tour of Austria and the Czech Republic.
Friel, a 6-4 guard form Durham, N.H., averaged 11.3 points, 2.6 assists and 1.5 rebounds a game in the 10 games on the trip. He made 45 percent (36-80) of his shots from the fieldand 78.6 percent (11-14) of his free throw attempts. He made 30 three-point field goals, and had 26 assists and just seven turnovers.
The NIKE NIT All-Star Team lost its first game on the tour before winning nine consecutive games.
Friel did not play in any games for Virginia during the 1998-99 season after transferring from Notre Dame. He lettered twice for the Fighting Irish, and averaged 8.9 points and 2.0 rebou9nds a game as a sophomore during the 1997-98 season. Frield led Notre Dame in three-point field goal percentage (46.4 percent, 45-97) and there-point field goals made (45) in 1997-98.
