CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team improved to 2-0 on theseason with a 3-0 (15-13, 15-8, 15-9) victory over Ohio University tonightin the first day of competition at the Jefferson Cup Tournament inUniversity Hall. Alabama also earned a 3-0 (15-7, 15-13, 15-8) win overFurman in the opening match of the tournament.
Third-year middle blocker Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park,Kan./Shawnee Mission) led the Cavaliers to the victory by postingteam-highs of 15 kills and 12 digs. Zwarich hit an impressive .419 (15kills, 2 errors on 31 attempts). Fourth-year middle blocker and 1998All-ACC First Team pick Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville)added 11 kills while hitting .407 (11 kills, 0 errors on 27 attempts).Fourth-year setter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep),UVa’s all-time assist leader, notched a game-high 40 assists and threeservice aces.
Senior middle hitter Katie Mullen recorded a match-high 16 kills,while junior outside hitter Amber Merrill added 13 kills to lead OhioUniversity. Merrill also tallied 12 digs.
In the opening match, junior outside hitter Michelle Green andfreshman middle blocker Shelly Adamcik posted 16 and 14 kills,respectively, to lead Alabama to a 3-0 win over Furman. Crimson Tidejunior setter Allison Lange led both teams with 46 set assists. Furmanjunior middle hitter Brooke Jackson paced the Lady Paladines with 10 kills.The Jefferson Cup Tournament concludes on Saturday, September 4, with furmatches taking place at University Hall.
