CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team defeated Alabama 3-2(12-15, 15-6, 15-7, 18-20, 15-9) in a five-game marathon that lasted threehours and 12 minutes at University Hall Saturday evening to win theJefferson Cup. The Wahoos won all three matches in the tournament, and inthe process improved to 4-0 on the season. Fourth-year setter Mary FrancesScott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) was named the Tournament MVPafter posting a match-high 72 set assists in the Alabama contest and 142assists in the tournament.
The UVa – Alabama match lasted 3:12 and featured a fourth game that took 58minutes to play, which is more than the length it takes to play some entirematches. There were an astonishing 509 combined attack attempts in thematch with 171 kills, including 89 by Virginia. Both teams registered 99digs as well. The fourth game, which the Crimson Tide won 20-18, featured176 attack attempts and 57 kills by the two teams.
In addition to her 72 assists, Scott added a team-high 21 digs and sixblocks. Virginia third-year outside hitters Katie Jones (Kingwood,Texas/Kingwood) and Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee MissionNorth) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Jones posted a career andteam-high 25 kills and also added 19 digs. Zwarich, who converted herfirst seven attacks in the match, finished with a career-high 22 kills,eight digs, five blocks and three service aces. Fourth-year middle blockerand 1998 All-ACC First Team pick Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks,Ill./Libertyville) and third-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (SantaBarbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) both added 16 kills for the ‘Hoos.
Alabama (1-2) had two players, junior Michelle Green and freshman ShellyAdamcik, named to the All-Tournament Team. Green tallied 22 kills and 26digs in the final match, while Adamcik posted 10 kills and eight blocks.Senior Monica Morales registered a team-high 25 kills, to go along with 15digs.
In the 5:00 p.m. match, Ohio University (2-2) defeated Furman 3-1 (15-12,15-9, 8-15, 15-11) to earn runner-up honors in the tournament with a 2-1record. Junior Amber Merrill and senior Katie Mullen were both named tothe All-Tournament Team for the Bobcats. Merrill posted a match-high 25kills, while Mullen added 20 to lead Ohio to the victory. Sophomore setterLaura Hooks was Furman’s lone selection on the All-Tournament Team. Sheposted 55 set assists, nine digs and three blocks for the Lady Paladines,who fal to 0-3 on the season.
Virginia returns to action on Friday and Saturday, September 10-11,when it plays in the Hi IQ Classic in Williamsburg, Va. UVa plays hostWilliam & Mary at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and Dartmouth and Riceat 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
