CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamlooked to get back to its winning ways as the Cavaliers hosted theAppalachian State Mountaineers at Klockner Stadium. UVa, ranked 17th inthe Soccer America Collegiate Top 20 and 14th in the National SoccerCoaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 polls, was coming off adisappointing 3-2 setback to Gonzaga in its last outing. But that wouldn’tbe the case on this evening, as Virginia scored six unanswered goals beforeAppalachian State scored its first and only goal en route to an 8-1Cavalier victory.
UVa midfielder Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) gave theCavaliers an early 1-0 when he gathered a cross from teammate SheldonBarnes (Miramir, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and headed it into the goal 18:46into the contest.
Then, the game turned into the Ryan Trout (Media, Pa./Strath Haven)show as the UVa forward scored three consecutive goals in the first half ofplay. Trout’s first goal, the eventual game-winner, was scored at the21:32 mark when he scored on a free kick. Less than four minutes later(25:02), Trout scored his second goal after Chad Prince (Woodbury,N.Y./Syosset) found Barnes down field, who then found Trout with a crossthat resulted in a 3-0 Virginia lead. Trout’s third goal resulted off anEric Solomon (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) corner kick which extended theUVa lead to 4-0. With his third goal, Trout recorded the 44th hat trick inUVa soccer history. Barnes joined in on the scoring spree when he scoredhis third goal of the year of a Drew O’Donnell (Newton Square,Pa./Haverford) throw-in to make it a 5-0 lead at the break.
Trout picked right up where he left off in the second half, scoringhis fourth goal (unassisted) of the game at the 54:06 mark making it a 6-0Cavalier lead. In scoring his fourth goal, Trout became only the eighthCavalier to score four goals in one game and was the first UVa player topost four goals this decade. Appalachian State finally got the scoreboardat the 55:42 mark when Andy Simpson gathered a mishandled ball in theVirginia backfield and put an unassisted goal into the net to make it a6-1 game. However, the Mountaineers were unable to put together a run, andUVa added two more goals to close out the game. The Cavalier pulled out toa 7-1 lead when Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) scored his firstcollegiate goal off assists from Mike McQuatters (Clay, N.Y./ChristianBrothers Academy) and Totten at the 59:56 mark of the contest. Then,Totten recorded his second goal of the game at the 79:01 mark of a feedfrom teammate Rob Wright (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) to put thegame well out of reach at 8-1.
With the victory, Virginia improves its record to 2-1-0 on theseason while Appalachian State falls to 0-2-0 on the year. UVa will returnto action on Sunday, Sept 12 when the Cavaliers travel to College Park, Md.to face the #4 ranked Maryland Terrapins. The game is scheduled to beginat 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Ludwig Field on the campus of theUniversity of Maryland. The contest will be UVa’s first road game of theregular season.
