ATLANTA – Basketball coaches of all levels, not includingcollege or university, are invited to participate in one of four 1999Nike/WBCA Coaching Clinics. Atlanta (Sept. 25), Chicago (Oct. 2), LosAngeles (Oct. 16), and Philadelphia (Oct. 23) have been selected as thisyear’s host sites (facilities to be announced at a later date). VirginiaHead Coach Debbie Ryan will be the keynote speaker at the Philadelphiaclinic.
“The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association is extremely pleasedtoonce again team-up with Nike to host what we know will be fouroutstandinggrassroots clinics. These clinics will give coaches the opportunity tosharpen their skills and discuss Xs and Os of basketball with theircolleagues,” said WBCA Executive Director Beth Bass.
Each site will feature a top collegiate head women’s basketballcoach as the keynote speaker – Myra Sims (Emory University), Atlanta,Theresa Grentz (University of Illinois and President of WBCA), Chicago,Chris Gobrecht (University of Southern California), Los Angeles, andDebbieRyan (University of Virginia), Philadelphia. Rick Insell, head girl’sbasketball coach at Shelbyville (Tenn.) H.S. and Pat Hewitt, head girl’sbasketball coach at Hartsville (S.C.) will serve as the Nike/WBCA leadclinicians at the Atlanta and Philadelphia venues while Dorothy Gater,headgirl’s basketball coach at Marshall (Chicago, Ill.) and Julie Rousseau(former Los Angeles Sparks coach) will lead the clinics in Los AngelesandChicago.
Clinic attendees will learn valuable basic coaching tips including:
The Art of Coaching Girls’ and Women’s Basketball Developing a practice plan Fundamentals – footwork, passing, shooting and dribbling Speed, agility and quickness training Developing offensive skills Developing defensive skills
All clinics are one day, 9 a.m. – 5:15 p.m., with registrationbeginning at 8 a.m. There is a $15 pre registration fee or attendeescanregister at the facility the day of the clinic for $25. In addition,attendees can register online at www.wbca.org. The fee includes lunch.Attendees will also receive plenty of literature to take home and useduring the upcoming basketball season.
