CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Swimming Head Coach Mark Bernardino hasreleased the 1999-2000 schedule for the Cavalier men’s and women’s swimmingand diving teams. Both teams will compete in eight dual meets, includingfive challenging Atlantic Coast Conference matchups during the 1999-2000campaign.
The Virginia swimming program is coming off an outstanding 1998-99season. The UVa women finished 10th at the 1999 NCAA Swimming and DivingChampionships, the second highest finish in the history of the program. In1988, the women’s team was seventh at the NCAAs for its best-everperformance.
The Cavalier men were 14th at the 1999 NCAA Swimming andDiving Championships for their best finish ever. It marked thesecond-straight season that UVa established an all-time best finish at theNCAAs as the 1998 squad was 17th. Both teams won their respective ACCtitles in 1999 as well. The Virginia women were a perfect 9-0 in 1998-99and have won 12-consecutive dual meets, while the men finished with a 7-3record.
The men’s team opens the 1999-2000 season by hosting Tennessee at theVirginia Aquatic and Fitness Center on October 22. The Volunteers, thefirst of three UVa dual meet opponents who scored points at the 1999 NCAAChampionships, finished seventh at the NCAAs and will serve as an extremelydifficult opener for the Cavaliers. A dual meet at Clemson on October 30,will serve as the ACC opener for both teams as well as the season-openerfor the women. Clemson is the first of five Virginia women’s dual meetopponents that scored points in the 1999 NCAAs.
The men and the women hostPittsburgh on November 5, and then the UVa women participate in the DallasMorning News Classic on November 6-7, in Dallas, Texas. The women’s teamwill have a home meet against James Madison on November 19.
Virginia willhost the Cavalier Invitational from December 3-5, with men’s and women’steams from Harvard, Villanova, Central Connecticut State University, WestVirginia, and South Carolina scheduled to compete.
After a 40-day break between meets, the two Cavalier squads return toaction with a home ACC meet against North Carolina State on January 5. TheUVa teams will then take on Duke and North Carolina in away conferencematchups on January 21 and 22, respectively. After a home meet againstVillanova on January 29, the Cavaliers will host Maryland on February 5, inthe final dual meet of the season.
The championship portion of the schedule begins with the Women’s ACCChampionships in Chapel Hill, N.C., from February 17-19. The Men’s ACCChampionships will be February 24-26, also in Chapel Hill, N.C. TheWomen’s NCAA Regionals/Tar Heel Invitational will be held in Chapel Hill onFebruary 25-26, while the Men’s NCAA Regionals/Tar Heel Invitational willbe held March 3, also in Chapel Hill. The NCAA Women’s Championships willtake place from March 16-18, in Indianapolis, Ind., with the Men’s NCAAChampionships being held the following week, March 23-25, in Minneapolis,Minn.
