WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The Virginia volleyball team opened play in the Hi-IQClassic with a 3-0, 15-11, 15-6, 15-13, win over host William & Marytonight at William & Mary Hall. With the win, UVa improves to 5-0 on theseason, while William & Mary falls to 2-3. Virginia has now wonfour-straight matches over the Tribe.
Third-year middle blocker Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./ShawneeMission North) and fourth-year middle blocker Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks,Ill./Libertyville) led the Cavaliers to the victory with 11 kills apiece.Zwarich hit an impressive .435 (11 kills, 1 error, 23 attempts) and postedfive blocks, while Parsons added seven digs and four blocks. Fourth-yearsetter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) dished out amatch-high 36 assists and added 12 digs and four blocks.
As a team, Virginia totaled a season-high 10.5 blocks. The Cavaliersregistered one solo block and 19 block assists (team blocks are figured bydividing block assists by two and adding block solos). The ‘Hoos hit .272in the match compared to .078 for William & Mary.
Virginia concludes play in the Hi-IQ Classic with two matches onSaturday, September 11. The Cavaliers play Dartmouth at 10:00 a.m. andRice at 4:00 p.m.
