HARRISONBURG, Va. — JMU’s Beth Burgess came off the bench and scoreda pair of goals in the final twenty minutes to help the Dukes upset the #13Cavaliers (1-2) in Harrisonburg tonight. The Dukes (2-1) were down 0-1 athalftime but Burgess scored twice, including on a drive from midfield withsix minutes to play to secure the upset.
Darci Borski (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) put the Cavalierson the board in the 13th minute as her corner kick swung between the postsand gave the Hoos the 1-0 lead. Virginia led at halftime 1-0 as both teamsmanaged six shots in the opening period, but Virginia keeper Julie Harris(Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) made four of her five saves to keep theDukes off the board.
Burgess tied the game as she took a through ball from Jamie Millerand blasted a shot from 15 yards out in the 70th minute. In the 84thminute, she collected a ball at midfield and beat three defenders andscored to give the Dukes the lead they would not relinquish.
The Cavaliers outshot the Dukes 18-11 and had the advantage incorner kicks, 9-1. But JMU’s Suzanne Wilson stopped seven Cavalier shots tosend the Dukes to the upset.
The Cavaliers will face Fresno State in their home opener onSunday, Sept. 12. Game time against the Bulldogs is 1:00.
