Cross Country Squads Continue Season

Running at home….. The Cavaliers hosted the Lou Onesty Invitational, the only home event for the Cavaliers this season. Cavalier teammates Jenna Composti (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem) and Kimberly Myers (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) finished in sixth and seventh respectively in their first collegiate cross country race to spark the women’s team to a second place finish at the Lou Onesty Invitational today in Charlottesville. Captain Dana Coons (Vienna, Va./James Madison) finished in ninth place to place three Cavaliers in the top 10. The women finished second to James Madison, who took the first three places and five in the top 10 to win the race with 19 points as the Cavaliers had 57.

Virginia freshmen Thad Minshall (Chevy Chase, Md./Landon) and Brian Wood (Nevada City, Calif./Nevada Union) both finished in the top 10 in their first collegiate cross country race to help the men’s cross country team to a third place finish at the Lou Onesty Invitation. Minshall’s time of 26:36.8 was good enough for seventh while Wood finished in tenth at 26:52.4. The men’s race was won by Liberty who perfect scored the meet. William and Mary placed five runners in the top 14 to take second with 50 points and the Cavaliers were third with 84 points.

The Cavaliers will travel to Chapel Hill next weekend, Sept. 18, to compete in the ACC Preview meet held at North Carolina.

Looking Ahead:
Running down Tobacco Road: The Cavaliers will race this weekend at the ACC Preview meet at UNC. In 1998, the men’s team finished fourth behind Bobby Thiele’s fourth place finish and the women took fifth place as Jennifer Owens took All-ACC honors with a sixth-place run. Four of the top five women and five of the top seven women for the Cavaliers return for a run this year and three of the top seven men return for the Hoos.

Individual / Team Notes:
One week, one award!: Two first years were named the Ragged Mountain Running Shop runners of the week for their performances at the Lou Onesty Invitational. Thad Minshall (Chevy Chase, Md./Landon) and Jeanna Composti (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem) were honored in the first week of their collegiate careers.
