COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Virginia volleyball team suffered itsthird-straight loss when it was defeated by South Carolina 3-0 (15-13,15-6, 15-11) today in Columbia, S.C. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to7-3 on the season, while South Carolina improves to 6-4.
Fourth-year setter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep)posted a match-high 29 set assists, and in the process became just thesixth ACC player to surpass the 5,000-assist milestone. She reached theplateau with her 23rd assist of the match, and has now totaled 5,006assists in her career. Scott broke UVa’s all-time assist record in the1998 season. Scott also led UVa with 13 digs and contributed three blockassists. Fourth-year middle blocker Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks,Ill./Libertyville) led Virginia with 10 kills and added five of theCavaliers’ 18 block assists.
For South Carolina, the win is the 300th career victory for Head Coach KimChristopher. Leading the Gamecocks was Berna Dwyer with 12 kills, threeaces and 16 digs. Danika Taylor added 10 kills, while Megan Hosp dishedout 29 assists.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, September 24, when it opens ACC playby hosting North Carolina at 7:30 p.m. in University Hall. The Cavaliersclose out the ACC weekend by hosting North Carolina State at 7:00 p.m. onSaturday, September 25.
