Virginia’s Thomas Jones and Yubrenal Isabelle gained ACC Player of theWeekhonors this week for thier respective positions. The Cavaliers defeatedWake Forest 35-7 on Sept. 18 to improve to 2-1 overall and 2-1 inconference play.
OFFENSIVE BACK – Thomas Jones (TB) VirginiaJones, a 5-10, 207-pound senior out of Big Stone Gap, Va., rushed for164yards on 24 carries (6.8 yards per carry) and three touchdowns inVirginia’s 35-7 win over Wake Forest Saturday. Jones had two long runsof37 and 30 yards and had touchdown runs of 15 yards and 12 yards. Thethreetouchdowns is the most touchdowns Jones has scored in a game. Jonesalsohad two receptions for 36 yards, to bring his total offensive output to200yards for the game.
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN – Jason Whitaker (G) Florida StateWhitaker graded out at a team-best 96.3 percent as Florida State totaled378 yards in total offense in a 42-11 victory over 20th-ranked NC State.Whitaker did not allow a sack and was credited with three pancake blocksand five intimidations.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN – Yubrenal Isabelle (ILB) VirginiaIsabelle, a 6-1, 237-pound junior from Bluefield, West Virginia, ledVirginia’s defensive linemen with 10 tackles, including seven solos andthree assists in the Cavaliers’ 35-17 win over Wake Forest Saturday. Hisstandout play was instrumental in the Cavaliers’ holding the Deacons to80yards on the ground and 137 yards in the air for a total offense of 217yards.
DEFENSIVE BACK – Lewis Sanders (CB) MarylandSanders, a 6-1, 200-pound junior cornerback spearheaded Maryland’sdefensein a 33-0 shutout victory over West Virginia Saturday. The StatenIsland,N.Y., product returned one fumble 28 yards for a touchdown and pickedoffhis third pass of the season as the Terps intercepted Mountaineer QBMarcBulger four times. In addition, Sanders returned a kickoff 32 yards.
SPECIALIST – Sebastian Janikowski (PK) Florida StateJanikowski, a 6-2, 255-pound junior from Daytona Beach, Florida, tied aschool record with five field goals in the Seminoles’ 42-11 win over20th-ranked NC State. Janikowski also kicked three extra points andtied aschool record with 18 points. Eight of his 10 kickoffs resulted intouchbacks, including two that hit the uprights.
ROOKIE – Calvin McCall (QB) MarylandIn earning ACC Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week,McCall, a 6-3, 189-pound freshman from Miami, Fla., completed 11 of 19passes for 178 yards and two second half touchdowns in the Terps’ 31-0winover visiting West Virginia. In addition, McCall ran eight times for 11yards and did commit a turnover in his third career start.
