COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Four University of Virginia swimmers have earnedhonors from USA Swimming for their performances this past year. Secondyear Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) has been named to the USASwimming’s 1999 All-Star team, the 1999-2000 National ‘A’ Team, and USASwimming’s 1999 All-America team. Fourth year Austin Ramirez (Brookfield,Wisc./Brookfield Central) and third year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood)have been named to USA Swimming’s 1999 All-America team, while first yearCara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) has been selected to USA Swimming’s1999-2000 National ‘B’ team.
Moses earned all three honors for his performances in the 100 and 200-meterbreaststroke. USA Swimming’s 1999 All-Star team honors the top-rankedAmerican in each event in the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur(FINA) World Rankings as of September 2, 1999. Moses’ time of 1:00.99 inthe 100 breast set the Pan American Games record and ranks him number onein the world in 1999. His best time of 2:13.41 in the 200-meter breast setat the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships is sixth on theworld list as well. Moses is one of 20 men named to USA Swimming’s1999-2000 National ‘A’ team. He was selected in both the 100 and 200breast. The National ‘A’ team is comprised of U.S. swimmers who rank inthe top eight in their events in the FINA World Rankings as of September 2,1999. The third honor for Moses is being named to the USA SwimmingAll-America team in the 100 and 200 breast. The USA Swimming All-Americateam features 130 swimmers (men and women) who equaled or bettered thefaster eighth-place preliminary time from either the spring or summer 1998National Championships, while competing in either the spring or summer 1999National Championships.
Ramirez and Grimes were also selected to the USA Swimming’s 1999All-America Team along with Moses. Ramirez garnered the honor in the400-meter freestyle with his time of 3:55.54, the eighth fastest time by anAmerican this year. Ramirez clocked that time while placing sixth at thePhillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships. Ramirez recently won twothe 1500-meter freestyle and earned a second place in the 400 free at thefirst-ever Bank of America/U.S. Olympic Cup that the USA won over Franceand Great Britain. Ramirez also swam a leg on the USA’s winning 800-meterfreestyle relay. Grimes’ seventh-place finish in 15:38.72 in the1500-meter freestyle at the USA National Championships earned him a spot onthe USA Swimming All-America team. His time is the ninth best by anAmerican in 1999.
Lane has been selected to USA Swimming’s 1999-2000 National ‘B’team in the 1500-meter freestyle. She earned the honor by winning the goldmedal at the World University Games with a time of 16:32.04. Lane also wonthe 800 at the World University Games in a time of 8:42.62. The National’B’ team is comprised of U.S. Swimmers who rank in the top 9-16 in theirevent in the FINA World Rankings as of September 2, 1999. For non-Olympicevents (men’s 800 free and women’s 1500 free, swimmers must rank in the top5-8 to qualify).
