PIKESVILLE, Md. – Third year University of Virginia tennis player BrianVahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won his first and second roundsingles matches of the main draw at the T. Rowe Price NationalIntercollegiate Clay Court Championships on Thursday at the Suburban Clubof Baltimore County. Third year Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill,N.C./Chapel Hill) lost in the first round of singles play, but came back towin his consolation-bracket match. Vahaly and Montgomery teamed to wintheir first round doubles match as well.
Vahaly, seeded ninth in the tournament, defeated James Shortfall ofMississippi 6-0, 6-3 in the first round. During the afternoon session, heearned his second straight-set win of the day with a 7-6 (0), 6-0 victoryover Jose Sanchez of Virginia Commonwealth. Vahaly is ninth in theIntercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason Singles ranking.
Montgomery lost to Steve Huss of Aubrun 6-2, 6-4 in his first round match.In the consolation bracket, Montgomery defeated Ohio State’s Chris Porter4-6, 6-4, 6-1. He will continue singles play in the consolation bracketFriday. Montgomery is the ranked 76th in the Preseason ITA rankings.
In doubles play, the third-seeded duo of Vahaly and Montgomery, rankedsixth by the ITA, overcame a 6-7 (8) loss in the first set to defeat NewMexico’s Matt Amgwerd and Takesha Itoh. Vahaly and Montgomery won thesecond and third sets 6-0, 6-2 to win the match and advance to Friday’ssecond round.
Play in the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championshipswill run through the weekend, conlcuding on Sunday, September 26.
