CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Cavaliers rallied from a 2-0 deficit inthe second half with a three goal outburst to lead #17 Virginia to a 3-2defeat of #23 Stanford in the second game of the 1999 Coca-Cola Classic.Jill Maxwell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) hit a pair of goals in a seven minutespan to tie the game and Angela Hucles (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy)scored the game winner with under three minutes of play to lead theCavaliers to the win.
After both teams battled to a scoreless first half, Stanford got onthe board first less than five minutes into the second period. MarciaWallis collected a loose ball 40 yards out and dribbled into the box andshot the ball past an advancing Megan Boehm (Columbia, Mo./Howard).
Stanford went up 2-0 when Ronnie Fair hit a free kick into the leftside of the cage in the 68th minute.
At that point the Cavaliers rallied to take control of the match.Just 49 seconds later off of the kickoff, Hucles served a ball into the boxwhich was not collected by Stanford’s keeper. Maxwell picked up the looseball and deposited it in the net, cutting the margin to one at 2-1. Sevenminutes later Kelly Worden (Spring, Tex./Klein) hit a looping cross ball toMaxwell on the right flank. Maxwell controlled the ball and sent a longcurving shot past the Stanford goalie who had come off her line to tie thegame in the 76th minute.
Stanford almost regained the lead in the 80th minute when a KelseyCarlson shot hit the crossbar and Becky Myers tried to tap in the reboundbut her shot went just wide of the net.
Virginia took the lead for good as Hucles took a through ball fromKatie Tracy (Richmond, Va./James River) and shot a ball that bounced offthe left post into the cage in the 88th minute.
Julie Harris (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) started in the net forthe Cavaliers and recorded one save on Stanford’s three shots whileallowing no goals. Boehm got the win as she saved two of Stanford’s sixsecond-half shots.
The Cavaliers host the second day of the Coca-Cola Classic thisSunday, September 26. The #11 Richmond Spiders and the Cardinal face offat 1:00 and the Cavaliers and the #7 Hartford Hawks tangle at 3:00 Richmondand Hartford tied 1-1 in the first game of the tournament.
