PIKESVILLE, Md. – The University of Virginia doubles tandem of third yearsBrian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery(Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) won their second round match at the T. RowePrice National Clay Court Championships on Friday afternoon, but wereeliminated from the tournament with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 loss in thequarterfinals later Friday. Both players also lost their singles matcheson Friday. The National Clay Court Championships are being held at theSuburban Club of Baltimore County and conclude on Sunday.
Vahaly and Montgomery, seeded third, advanced to the quarterfinals of thedoubles tournament by defeating the Texas tandem of Michael Blue and NickCrowell 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Friday afternoon. On Friday evening, the pair fellto Duke’s Doug Root and Ramsey Smith 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 and were eliminated fromthe tournament.
In singles action, Vahaly dropped his third round match in the main draw toNew Mexico’s Matt Amgwerd 6-2, 6-1. Vahaly, ranked ninth in the ITAPreaseason Rankings, teamed with Montgomery to defeat Amgwerd and hispartner in doubles action 6-7 (8), 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday.
After winning his first round consolation match over Ohio State’s ChrisPorter 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday, Montgomery lost to Daniel Wajnberg ofGeorgia State 6-3, 7-5 in Friday’s second round.
