No. 17 Virginia Holds Off No. 18 North Carolina, 2-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamlooked to record its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the seasonagainst conference rival North Carolina. The Tar Heels entered the conteston a five-game winning streak and looked to gather their first win inCharlottesville over UVa since 1977. The Cavaliers brought a 0-1-1 ACCmark into the contest. Virginia jumped out to an early 2-0 first-half leadbefore North Carolina posted a second-half goal to narrow the score to 2-1.However, the UVa defense held off the UNC scoring attack to preserve a 2-1victory in front of 2,560 spectators at Klockner Stadium.

First-year sensation Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) putVirginia on the scoreboard first at 10:10 when he gathered a crossing passfrom teammate Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) to make it a 1-0contest. The duo then exchanged roles when Sheldon Barnes (Miramir,Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) teamed with Gibbs on a crossing pass to Martinowhich resulted in another Cavalier goal at 29:27 to make it a 2-0 Virginialead. UVa held UNC in check for the remainder of the half to take a 2-0lead into the locker rooms.

Trailing by two goals, North Carolina put together an offensivesurge and scored its first goal of the game when Daniel Jackson foundteammate Chris Carrieri at 78:57 to make it a 2-1 contest. But theVirginia defense buckled down and held off the Tar Heel charge. UVagoalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) gatheredfour saves en route to the 2-1 Virginia win.

With the victory, Virginia improves its record to 5-2-1, 1-1-1 in theACC. The loss drops North Carolina’s record to 6-2-0, 1-1-0 in theconference. The Cavaliers will return to home action on Wednesday,September 29 when Virginia faces the American Eagles. The contest isscheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be played at Klockner Stadium.The Tar Heels will host host Duke on October 2.
