CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers battled back from a 2-0 halftimedeficit to force overtime, but Old Dominion finally won the game as MarinaDiGiacomo converted a penalty corner with 1:16 remaining in the extrasession. With the 3-2 loss, the Cavaliers fall to 6-2 while ODU improves to7-3.
Old Dominion got on the board first as Kim Miller converted acorner rebound at the 13:17 mark of the first half. The Monarchs went up2-0 at 7:25 when DiGiacomo converted a stroke. ODU was awarded the strokeafter the Cavaliers stopped the ball on the line with a foot.
In the second half the Cavaliers responded and kept fighting. Whilethe defense allowed the Monarchs only two shots and one corner in thesecond stanza, the offense took seven shots and forced four corners. USATeam member Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) broughtVirginia within one as she connected on a penalty corner at the 12:26 mark.Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Laura Lindsay(Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) were both credited with assists on thegoal.
Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) tied the game on ascrappy play in front of the cage. Virginia worked a breakaway and drew along hit, which Elwell collected and tried to sneak in the cage. RosieWalker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) sent the rebound back into the ODUkeeper, and that rebound found its way to Elwell who slapped it in the netto tie the game.
In the overtime period, the Cavaliers were able to force a cornerbut were unable to convert it. On Old Dominion’s only corner of the extraframe, Miller sent the ball to DiGiacomo who sent it into the far cornerfor the win.
The Cavaliers go on a four-game road swing, starting with a trip toWilliamsburg on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Game time against the Tribe is 4:00pm.
