Men’s Soccer Pulls Away From American, 2-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamlooked to extend its two-game winning streak to three games with a contestagainst the American Eagles at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers held a 6-3advantage over the Eagles in the series history entering the game, but AUhad defeated UVa twice in the last three contests the two schools hadcompeted. Playing in a steady rain the entire game, Virginia scored oncein the first half and recorded a second goal with four seconds remaining inthe contest to secure a 2-0 victory over American.

First-year forward Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) put theCavaliers on the scoreboard first at 30:44 when Ryan Trout (Media,Pa./Strath Haven) gathered a loose ball and pushed in upfield to findSheldon Barnes (Miramir, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Gibbs on a two-on-onebreak. Barnes gathered Trout’s pass and sent the ball on a cross to Gibbswhere he fired a shot that beat American goalkeeper Mike Gorsegner to giveUVa a 1-0 lead. Virginia would take it’s 1-0 lead into the locker room athalftime.

The Eagles opened up their offensive attack in the second half ofplay, but the UVa defense countered right back and held American in check.The Cavaliers allow only three shots on goal as Virginia goalkeeper KyleSinger (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and the Virginia defenseposted their second shutout of the season. With ten seconds remaining inthe game, UVa added a second score when Trout gathered a loose ball andtook it straight to the goal and beat AU’s Gorsegner for another Virginiascore at 89:56 to make it a 2-0 contest.

With their goals, both Gibbs and Trout recorded their sixth goal ofthe season. The duo is currently tied for most scored goals on the team.Trout’s goal was his sixth game-winner of his career.

The win improves UVa’s record to 6-2-1 overall, while the lossdrops American’s record to 2-5-0 on the season. The Cavaliers will returnto action on Sunday, October 3rd when Virginia travels to Raleigh, N.C. totake on ACC rival North Carolina State. The contest is scheduled to beginat 1:00 p.m.
