RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team lookedto gather its second Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season as UVasquared off against host N.C. State at the Method Road Soccer Complex.
After falling behind 1-0, the Cavaliers tied the contest 1-1 and appearedto be headed to overtime, until NCSU’s Nick Olivencia scored thegame-winning goal for N.C. State as time expired to give the Wolfpack adramatic 2-1 victory over the visiting Cavaliers.
N.C. State jumped on the scoreboard first when Olivencia gathered across from teammate Damon Butler and put it into the goal at 23:38 to makeit a 1-0 Wolfpack lead. The Cavaliers were unable to answer NCSU score andwent into the half trailing by a goal.
The Cavaliers began the second half of play with an offensiveattack that resulted in a Virginia goal at 50:57 when Kyle Martino(Westport, Conn./Staples) sent a pass upfield that connected with teammateRyan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East). Gibbs beat his defender and fired ashot past N.C. State goalkeeper Mitchell Watson to make it a 1-1 contest.Gibbs’ goal was his seventh of the season and he now lead the team in goalsscored this year.
UVa had several opportunities to pull ahead, but had to overcome anadditional obstacle when Martino was ejected from the game at 58:08 afterreceiving a red card. Down a man on the field, the Cavaliers held theirground an appeared to be heading to overtime as the final ten seconds ofthe game ticked away when the Wolfpack made one last run. Olivenciacollected a pass from near midfield, dribbled ahead and split two Virginiadefenders and ripped a shot past Cavalier goalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth,Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) that resulted in the game-winning goal as timeexpired. After the officials gathered to see if the goal was scored beforethe horn had sounded, referee George Vergara counted the goal and announcethe game was completed.
UVa is now 0-2 on the road, with both losses coming in conferenceaction. The Cavaliers are now 33-15-6 all-time against N.C. State.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 6-3-1 overall, 1-2-1 inthe ACC. The win improves N.C. State’s record to 4-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 inthe conference. The Cavaliers will return to action when UVa host William& Mary on Wednesday, October 6 at Klockner Stadium. The contest isscheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
