PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Virginia women’s tennis team had onesingles player and two doubles teams advance to the finals of the 1999Brown Invitational on Saturday in Providence. Third year Kelly Weaver(Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) advanced to Sunday’s Flight C Singles final,while the Flight A doubles team of third years Christie Schweer (Houston,Texas/Memorial) and Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian),and the Flight C doubles tandem of second years Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah,N.J./Mahwah) and Jana Liskovcova (South Easton, Mass./Mansfield) alsoearned appearances in Sunday’s finals.

Weaver advanced to the finals of Flight C Singles by defeating Harvard’sAarti Jerath 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4. Weaver will meet Carly Bashleben ofDartmouth in Sunday’s final. Liskovcova will vie for the Flight Cconsolation title after earning quarterfinal and semifinal victories onSaturday. She advanced to the semifinals with a default win over AnishaFernando of Boston College. In the semis, Liskovcova beat BostonUniversity’s Alana Marcu 6-0, 6-1.

In Flight A Singles competition, O’Donnell lost her semifinal match toBoston College’s Cynthia Tow 6-4, 6-1. Schweer advanced to the finals ofthe Flight A consolation bracket with a pair of wins. Early Saturday,Schweer posted a three-set, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Dartmouth’s AllisonTaff in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Schweer notched a 6-2, 7-6 (3)win over Pille Arike of Seton Hall to advance to Sunday’s final where shewill play Selin Nassi of Boston University.

UVa first year Jennifer Tuchband (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) dropped ahard-fought semifinal match in Flight B Singles. Tuchband lost to KirenFernando of Boston College 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-6 (5). In the consolationbracket of Flight B, Cook lost to Boston College’s Mercedes del Valle 7-5,6-3 in the semifinals. Cook advanced to the semis with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4)quarterfinal win over Jennifer Mitchell of Loyola Marymount.

In doubles competition, Schweer and Cook gained a berth in the finals ofFlight A by defeating the Seton Hall duo of Kyli Lasalle and LauraMcCracken 9-7 in the semis. In Flight C, O’Donnell and Liskovcova reachedthe finals by handing a 9-7 setback to Dartmouth’s Courtney Smalley andCarly Bashleben. In Flight B doubles play, Tuchband and Weaver will playfor the consolation championship after defeating Loyola Marymount’s PenkaFileva and Holli Freudenberg 9-8 (3) in the semifinals.

The 1999 Brown Invitational concludes Sunday.
