PROVIDENCE, R.I. — University of Virginia third year tennis player KellyWeaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) won the Singles Flight C title at theBrown Invitational on Sunday in Providence. Third year teammate ChristieSchweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) also found success as she bounced backfrom an opening round loss to win four straight matches, including thefinal on Sunday, to win the Singles Flight A Consolation final.
Weaver, the number one seed, won the Flight C title by defeatingDartmouth’s Carly Bashleben 6-4, 7-5. Weaver lost just one set in fourmatches en route to the title. Schweer earned the Flight A consolationbracket title with a three-set victory over Selin Nassi of BostonUniversity. Schweer posted a 6-3 win in the first set before suffering a6-4 setback in the second set. She clinched the title with a 6-0 triumphin the third and final set.
A pair of Cavaliers also claimed third-place singles finishes in the BrownInvitational. Second year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) capturedthird place in Flight A with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dartmouth’s RebeccaDirksen. In Flight B, first year Jennifer Tuchband (Raleigh,N.C./Broughton) took third place with a default win over Carrie Rose ofBoston University.
In the consolation final of Flight C Singles, third year Jana Liskovcova(South Easton, Mass./Mansfield) fell to B.U.’s Alana Marcu 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles flight results were not available. Schweer and third year LeslieCook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian), the second seed, were toplay top-seeded Rebecca Dirksen and Allison Taff of Dartmouth for the titlein Flight A. Virginia’s Flight C doubles team of O’Donnell and Liskovcovawere scheduled to play the Harvard duo of Aarti Jerath and OliviaGarcia-McKean in the championship match. Finally, in Flight B doublesconsolation play, Tuchband and Weaver were to take on Seton Hall’s PilleArike and Judy McAuley in that title match.
