FAIRFAX, Va. — The Cavaliers went down 2-0 in the first 18 minutesagainst in-state rival George Mason but stormed back for three unansweredgoals, including one in the 20th minute, to defeat the Patriots 3-2 todayin Fairfax. Senior captain Angela Hucles (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy)scored less than two minutes after Mason’s second goal and assisted TraceyLache (Littleton, Co./Heritage) in the 83rd minute to help the Cavaliersimprove to 9-4 on the season.
George Mason went up 1-0 in the 11th minute as Katy Robertsontouched in a pass from Stephanie Hancock 10 yards out. The Patriots went up2-0 in the 18th minute after Angela Lombardi was taken down in the penaltybox and Robertson converted the PK. It was to be the last time the Patriotswould find the back of the net.
Less than two minutes after the GMU pernalty kick, the Cavalierswere awarded a penalty kick of their own. Hucles took the initial shotwhich was saved by the Patriot keeper, but Hucles collected the rebound andstuffed it in the net. The teams entered halftime with Mason leading 2-1.
In the 55th minute, the Cavaliers converted a corner kick as JillMaxwell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) headed in a service by Meredith Rhodes(Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) to pull even with the Patriots. Virginiafinally took the lead for good as Lache took a back pass from Hucles in the83rd minute with what would prove to be the game-winner.
Julie Harris (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) started in the net forthe Cavaliers and recorded six saves, three in each half. Virginia returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15 as the Cavaliers hostACC-rival Florida State at 7:00 pm.
