GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina received 22 of 38 first place votes and320 total points to finish first in the Atlantic Coast Conference women’sbasketball pre-season poll, conducted on Tuesday at the conference’s annualwomen’s basketball media day.
The Tar Heels were followed in the balloting by NC State, which received 14first-place votes for a total of 302 points and the Virginia Cavaliers whofinished third after receiving two first-place ballots for 260 points. Thedefending ACC regular season champion Duke Blue Devils finished fourth inthe voting with 260 points, and the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech werefifth with 192 points.
Defending ACC Champion Clemson was sixth with a 166 point total, andFlorida State was seventh with 110 points. Maryland and Wake Forestfinished eighth and ninth, with 88 and 64 points respectively.
In balloting for the 1999-2000 preseason All-Conference team, NC Statesenior Summer Erb was selected to the team along with fellow Wolfpackjunior Tynesha Lewis. Erb, the 1999 ACC Player of the Year, was also pickedas the conference’s preseason Player of the Year. Joining Lewis and Erb onthe preseason All-Conference team were North Carolina junior Nikki Teasley,Virginia junior Erin Stovall, and 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year Niesha Butlerof Georgia Tech.
Duke freshman Sheana Mosch was selected as the preseason Rookie of the Year.
